The FTC seems to MISCONCEPT

Pretend these fish are in a barrel. (Image from Pexels)
EDIT (11/24/2019): THE FTC HAS RELEASED AN ARTICLE CLARIFYING COPPA AND ACKNOWLEDGES THAT NOT ALL THINGS THAT APPEAL TO KIDS IS MADE FOR KIDS. READ THE OFFICIAL FTC ARTICLE HERE. THANK YOU, GREEN LEAF PRODUCTIONS OF YOUTUBE FOR MAKING A VIDEO BRINGING THIS TO LIGHT.

The Federal Trade Commission is going down on YouTube and it’s creators due to the violation of COPPA, which is a law that protects children’s privacy on the internet. However, as Chadtronic and Arlo of YouTube points out, their descriptions are vague as hell. But with such shenanigans, it makes me not only confused, but seem to be wondering if they realize age ratings exists for a reason?

The vagueness is found in a PDF by the FTC titled, “Protecting Children’s Privacy Under COPPA: A Survey on Compliance.” In this official pdf file, you will find their descriptions on page 28 of 52. Thanks to Chadtronic and Arlo of YouTube who in their videos discussing the matter pointed this out. Their videos will be linked to this post. The document shows that subject matter that involves video games and cartoons are likely to have you accused of marketing towards kids. As a result, they can fine you even though you are innocent. The fact that they say subject matter such as video games especially Doom and Animation especially Anime and older rated western shows like Family Guy and South Park can be likely to be ruled targeted to children by the FTC shows that the TV age rating boards and the ESRB need to chime in. Because, I can only gather that they seem to allegedly have a misconception that games and anime are appealing to kids exclusively. For f**k sake, the FTC fails to understand that not all toys are for kids.

It’s time for me to blunt. WHY DO I HAVE AN R18 SECTION SET UP? Because there will be a time where I will discuss on games, anime, merch, and figurines that can be erotic and not made for children. There are games that are too bloody such as the Doom franchise, especially the 2016 remake that is getting a sequel. Not to mention, there are games that are a bit erotic or too suggestive for Kids. Speaking of, Let’s talk about Senran Kagura, a franchise that involves kunoichi and sexual shenanigans (insert Lenny face here) and the more erotic example, Custom Order Maid 3D 2 a maid business simulator where not only can you dress up your waifu in more revealing wear but you can engage in sexual intercourse as well. Let’s talk about anime. While it is Japanese animation, we can’t just underestimate them as anime as of now mostly target older audiences. The sad part about this, if someone at the FTC were to binge watch all episodes of Made in Abyss, they would lose their minds and cry for censors. It all just leads to a problem we all have. There are people who consistently fail to understand that games and anime have evolved as a form of entertainment just like movies. Movies had to expand with IPs that would cater to a few demographics at a time. An example, horror movies were made for the older audiences who wish for gritty and scary stories in visual form. Video Games, Anime, and Collectibles had to go the same route as movies.

That Tamamo-no-Mae figurine was not made for little girls in mind. This was made as fan-service type collectible for people who are fans of Tamamo no Mae of the Fate series, as said, not for kids. How she ended up as a servant to be summoned in the Holy Grail wars carries a dark tale too brutal for little Sally. Don’t Even get me started on the Mage from Bikini Warriors, a Hobby Japan franchise for older audiences. I might as well take off her bra portion of her bikini outfit. Yes, there is such figurine. Back to games and anime as I am done talking about collectibles. When you get horror films such as Friday the 13th and The Thing, you get horror games such as Silent Hill and Soma and horror anime such as Boogiepop Phantom and Serial Experiments Lain (I should have considered the whole series when I decided to get that VHS tape at the dollar store). Someone here has to make a point and get it across.

Let’s all hope that FTC understands age ratings all around the world. Because, if they are going to label all games, anime, and toys targeted to children, then the COPPA law may become such a disaster.
